More payment options for merchants on eBay

Alternative payment systems eBay has announced that it will no longer allow third-party checkout services on its site after June 30, 2011 and for the first time in history, is allowing payment processors other than PayPal to manage transactions for eBay sellers.

eBay sellers can now accept payments via PayPal as well as through ProPay, Moneybookers, Paymate, and credit and debit cards processed through the seller's Internet merchant account. eBay now also authorizes sellers to receive payment upon pickup and make use of the "Bill Me Later" service that allows for delayed payment on certain types of purchases.

What eBay's New Payment Policy Means for Merchants
Merchants can now offer alternative payment methods on eBay that have a similar structure and checkout process as PayPal. Alternative payment methods are still traceable and secure, and the seller may be able to attract more buyers for a particular item because they offer more options for payment. Providing more flexibility for buyers could lead to more sales and make it simpler for buyers to purchase items with a form of payment they are most comfortable with.

What eBay's New Payment Policy Means for Buyers
Consumers who are bidding and buying on eBay now have more options for paying for their merchandise. However, each method has its own set of rules and requirements, and smaller payment processors such as ProPay and Moneybookers may hold buyers liable for certain types of transactions. In most cases, credit card transactions and debit card transactions include some type of purchase protection depending on the order.

Buyers who want to physically inspect the item before they make a payment can now do so with the buyer pickup option. This may make it safer to purchase items from buyers who are located near the seller and for larger purchases that require an inspection. eBay sellers do have the option to include a surcharge for an in-person pickup transaction.

eBay still does not permit buyers to pay for merchandise with a check, money order or a bank transfer because the company wants to make sure that all transactions are safe, secure, convenient and traceable. The new policies provide both merchants and buyers with more options for managing the transaction with few risks.
