PayPal: Is it enough merchant account for your business?

Paypal as a merchant account

If you're a small-business owner or you're running a business that manages both online and offline payment processing, PayPal may be one of the best options for a merchant account. PayPal offers safe, secure and efficient payment processing for online business transactions and offers three account options for vendors.

Still, while PayPal is a good choice for many merchants, some businesses may benefit from having a second merchant account on top of PayPal.

Consider the following if you are thinking about opening a PayPal merchant account for your growing business or enterprise:

Types of businesses that benefit from PayPal
PayPal is widely used by thousands of businesses and is very easy to integrate into a website or online store. The types of businesses that most benefit from PayPal merchant accounts include:

  • Online retail stores
  • eBay sellers with storefronts
  • Service providers
  • Resellers of any type of goods and services
  • eBook sellers

Pros and cons of PayPal merchant account
PayPal allows you to accept payments from existing PayPal members who would prefer not to use their credit card or debit card to complete a transaction. PayPal uses its own virtual credit card processing system to handle the transaction, and charges a fee for each transaction based on the type of account you have. If you have a PayPal Premier or PayPal Business account, your customers still have the option to pay for goods and services using their debit or credit card.

If you're a small-business owner and want to process payments directly from your website, you can take advantage of the Payments Pro service or add a PayPal Express Checkout button to your site. These services make it easier for customers to complete their transaction within a few clicks, and the fees are relatively affordable for even smaller businesses. One of the biggest benefits of using PayPal is that there are no setup fees or monthly fees for Business accounts. You are only responsible for paying transaction fees.

While PayPal offers a number of benefits for merchants, there are some disadvantages to keep in mind. The transaction fees can add up and take away from your bottom line profits. In some cases, the fees can be higher than other third-party merchant account providers. If your account becomes excessively active, PayPal can freeze your account funds because it detects "suspicious activity." This can temporarily slow down business operations.

Other considerations with PayPal
Many growing businesses can enjoy a number of benefits with a PayPal merchant account, but can also benefit from using a second merchant account in addition to PayPal. Opening a second merchant account may offer more payment options for certain customers, and in some cases, can be a more cost-effective approach for handling a large volume of transactions. A second merchant account that handles larger or a higher volume of transactions may offer lower per-transaction fees, but may also require a larger upfront investment and have some setup costs.
